Medical Vs. Vision Insurance: What’s The Difference?
Your medical insurance will help cover medical eye exams.
- Patients requiring a physician's eye report, those with a medical history such as diabetes or a thyroid condition, or those taking certain high-risk medications, such as Plaquenil, have their eye exam considered medical.
- Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal conditions, and a history of flashes or floaters require a medically based-eye evaluation.
- Medical insurance, not vision insurance, also covers conditions like red, painful, or scratched eyes, eye irritation, and reduced or fluctuating vision.
Vision insurance helps share in your cost of vision expenses. It covers well vision examinations. A well-vision examination determines whether your eyes require glasses or contact lens prescription.
Vision insurance does not cover the monitoring and treatment of any medical eye conditions (e.g., eye infections, cataracts, glaucoma, flashes and floaters, etc.).
We will help you maximize your vision insurance to ensure you fully use the benefits. Typically, you'll be required to pay a copay or some out-of-pocket cost when receiving the service.
Alternative Financing Options
You may also use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Saving Account (HSA) card at Ranch Road Vision Source.
Most FSA and HSA plans allow for purchasing eye exams and prescription eyewear. Please contact your plan administrator for complete details about your benefits.
