Optomap Ultra Wide-field Retinal Scan

At Ranch Road Vision Source, our goal is to use cutting-edge technology to provide our patients with the BEST eye care. This is why we provide the Optomap Retinal Scan as an integral part of your comprehensive eye examination.

The Optomap is state of the art digital scanning technology that allows for ULTRA WIDE-FIELD imaging of the health of the retina (inside of your eye). A full 200 degree view is snapped in less than a second! The retina is the ONLY place in your body where blood vessels can be viewed directly. This means that in addition to eye diseases (such as macular degeneration or glaucoma) signs of other systemic diseases (such as cancer, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina.

Early signs of these condition can show up in your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel any pain. The Optomap allows our doctors to detect early signs from these vision-threatening conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is an Optomap image important?

The Optomap image will help your doctor detect problems more quickly and easily. Unlike traditional retinal exams, the Optomap image can be saved for future comparisons.

I am young and/or otherwise healthy, do I still need this scan?

Our doctors highly recommend the retinal scan because it is used as an important tool to provide the most thorough eye health assessment. When detected early enough, many retinal problems can be treated to avoid sight loss. However, once a retinal problem has caused sight loss, it is almost never reversible. Early detection is vital to preserving good eye health.

How soon will the doctor see the results?

Your doctor will have the results immediately, and you will be able to view this image with them in the exam room.

Do I still need to get dilated?

Dilation may still be necessary for some patients. Based on your individual case, your doctor will determine if you need to be dilated. Our doctors will recommend whatever is best for your ocular health.

Are there side effects?

Optomap images are created by non-invasive, low-intensity scanning lasers. No adverse effects have been reported in over 39 million sessions.

Is Optomap safe for children?

Yes. In fact, many vision problems begin in early childhood, so it’s important for children to receive quality routine eye care.

Does it hurt?

No. It is completely comfortable and the scan takes less than a second.

How often should I have Optomap images taken?

Our doctors recommended that you have the Optomap scan done each year during your annual eye exam. However, some patients may require it more frequently. This is a decision that should be made by your doctor.

Can I drive afterwards?

Yes. The Optomap scan will not blur your vision or make you sensitive to light.
