The Optomap is state of the art digital scanning technology that allows for ULTRA WIDE-FIELD imaging of the health of the retina (inside of your eye). A full 200 degree view is snapped in less than a second! The retina is the ONLY place in your body where blood vessels can be viewed directly. This means that in addition to eye diseases (such as macular degeneration or glaucoma) signs of other systemic diseases (such as cancer, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina.

Why is an Optomap image important?

The Optomap image will help your doctor detect problems more quickly and easily. Unlike traditional retinal exams, the Optomap image can be saved for future comparisons.

I am young and/or otherwise healthy, do I still need this scan?

Our doctors highly recommend the retinal scan because it is used as an important tool to provide the most thorough eye health assessment. When detected early enough, many retinal problems can be treated to avoid sight loss. However, once a retinal problem has caused sight loss, it is almost never reversible. Early detection is vital to preserving good eye health.

How soon will the doctor see the results?

Your doctor will have the results immediately, and you will be able to view this image with them in the exam room.

Do I still need to get dilated?

Dilation may still be necessary for some patients. Based on your individual case, your doctor will determine if you need to be dilated. Our doctors will recommend whatever is best for your ocular health.
